Digital Revolution could be a true messiah to the Indian film Industry

Film Industry probably is one of the top industries in the country both on revenue and number of people employed but at the same time very volatile and most unorganized. FICCI-KPMG study puts Indian industry at $2.2 bn and it is probably the No.1 Film Industry in the world churning out more than 800 films per year most made in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam.

The Industry is very unique in its own way as it was not even considered as an  industry till late 90s and the way Film Industry works is different from many organized sectors. The success rate is very low making films the risky business and though we saw corporate and studios entering the fray, most couldn’t sustain. Today the number of films being made has come down and reports show that the revenues have become stagnant while the cost of making films have gone up. We have seen films like Blue, Endhiran, Chandni Chowk to China and Magadheera being made at huge costs and the biggest problem the producer faces today is to recover costs and make money. With Piracy and Internet downloads threatening the inflow of people into the theatres and the reviews on internet and newspapers influencing the decision of the filmgoer, the job of film maker has become even tougher to grab maximum eyeballs in the first few days and recover the cost at the earliest.

A film maker recovers his cost thru selling the theatrical rights to his distributors in India and abroad, music rights and satellite rights. Though there is trail income that comes by way of exhibition of film for years, the biggest focus of any film maker today is to get big openings to recover his costs. In this Industry fortunes are made or broken over a weekend and with films releasing every weekend and with limited theatres at stake, the first week becomes very critical. The trend thus far has been to ensure release with maximum number of prints, create pre release hype and ensure collections. These days the marketing of the films has been slick and hype to create good openings has been at peak but finally if the script is not good enough, nothing works.

In any other industry the premium product commands premium price and an economy product gets lesser price and the costing of the product is also in direct correlation of the product type. You will rarely find that the ticket price of a budget film being priced low while a high budget flick being priced high. The only differentiator here is number of prints and there are times when we find that the small film makers seldom don’t get proper theatres and hence the flick suffers. I think its time the Industry innovates to ensure that the costs are recovered better which can obviously improve the health of the Industry.

One argument that seldom comes in this context is that film industry should reduce the costs to ensure better returns. While I agree on the same, a look at the costing clearly throws the fact that 50-60% of the cost of making a film goes towards remuneration of the stars and it is not really controllable as the remunerations are market dependent and also depends on the success of the stars. The producers should definitely look at other options to reduce costs and digital production and exhibition is one area which definitely could be a game changer. Digital production would definitely reduce the wastage in making a film and also save time. With advanced cameras like RED in vogue, the quality of the cinema will also improve along with cost, if digital production is adopted. Digital Projection or Digital exhibition can definitely reduce the cost of making multiple prints and save on film quality. Digital exhibition, though is now pretty popular hasn’t caught up the way it is supposed to be. Pyramid Saimira has decided to close shop and UFO is a big player on the same. I see that Bollywood is more active on digital cinema and other industries are yet to catch up. Digital exhibition not just gives an opportunity for wide release of the film but also security against piracy. Digital content protection software can resist piracy.

Theatre is the prime medium thru which films are being exhibited and spiraling multiplex and theatre rents are squeezing the margins for the Producers and Distributors. Internet as a medium is not embraced by film Industry as much as it is embraced by others. Internet could be the right answer for the film piracy if used well. We have seen some bollywood films getting into streaming medium like YOUTUBE and the producers of 3 IDIOTS have agreed for download from You Tube against a price 12 weeks after theatrical release. Telugu film Prasthanam was allowed on Internet on pay per view basis. This could be a game changer if used well. The Producers and Directors might be wondering if embracing internet could destroy the quality of film viewing as films projected in theatres give an exemplary experience with right sound. While it is true that films can be best experienced in theatres, the number of downloads over internet are spiraling and there are good number of people across the world who are downloading pirated prints and the move to market the product over internet could certainly reduce the risk of pirated prints. This could only add as an additional income and also can give an experience better than pirated prints. While music, TV and book publishing industry has used internet to the greatest advantage, film industry is still in the initial stages and the biggest medium according to me is being left out.

The next biggest medium that could change the future of the film viewing could be mobile phones. With 3G all set to invade the Indian telecom space, the opportunities are enormous. The medium can be used to promote and exhibit films on pay per view and can give flexibility to the viewer to watch whenever he wants. Streaming of music and downloads can boast revenue of producers as well as telecom companies.

DTH is another medium according to me which could help producers grab more and more eyeballs. There were few small budget flicks that saw release on TV but this could be a big medium which can take films to millions of homes India and abroad. Agreed that this could pose direct competition to theatres but the producers can consider a staggered release of a week on DTH on pay per view.  I think this could almost put an end to the rising pirated DVD market and considering the reach the Industry has, this could turnout to be a good revenue model for the films.

With Globalization of Indian films and with new markets opening up ( Telugu movies doing well in Kerala and the most popular movies in Poland are Indian and Telugu flicks), If the Industry could open itself up and embrace new technologies, medium and distribution channels we can see more successful movies and happy producers which in turn can give us varied cinema of different genre.

Villians make the most of the heroes

Sholay...Mr.India...Karma....Ram Lakhan..Shiva...

When you hear the names of the movies mentioned above, most of the faces would attract smile as these are few of the films that made us happy. When you hear sholay, you remember gabbar singh as much as jay and veeru and most of us may not be able to tell the name of the character Anil Kapoor played in Mr. India but we remember Mogambo. Loin makes people excited even today and the people of the present generation who havent even seen him loves him. Thats the power of the villian. A strong villian makes the hero even more stronger and hence the strong villian becomes as important if not more than a hero in a movie. Can you imagine the above movies without a strong villian? No ways. Isnt it?

Do I mean that the movie without a strong villian wont work? I dont mean a physical villian when I say so. Take the case of Anand. The disease that Rajesh Khanna battles is the villian in this movie and it could be the struggle the hero undergoes thats a villian in some cases. Ultimately unless the hero has a strong hero or a strong opposition, his character cannot be elevated.

This brings me back to the real life from reel life. How many times do we feel bad that we are facing difficulties in our lives? How many times do we blame god for the failures in our lives? How many times do we blame fate for things not happening the way it has to be? People who pass thru thr situations successfully vouch to the fact that the adverse situations and failure made them more stronger. Most of the successful people would definetely credit the failures they faced in the past for the present success. Failures, difficulties and obstacles are part and parcel of our lives and they come to us only to ensure that we emerge stronger. Like the way a strong villian makes a stronger hero, the tough situations makes a person even more stronger and successful.

So dont blame the failures and obstacles and rather learn from them to grow stronger.

Dead are not those who die.

Dead are not those who vanish….

Dead are not those who are forgotten….

Dead are we who are alive, kicking and live

But die every second of the life…

Dead are we who kill the life everyday

Dead are we who live by no purpose

Dead are we who live with no aim….

Death of the body is one time and ending…

Death of the conscience is a death that recurs….

Live the life…Love the life and make others live

As life without purpose is death ….

Help and empower others so that though u die…

You can live in the change u hv brought….

And spread the message of love and brotherhood

And living by purpose to be alive always…

Akkineni Nagarjuna- A remarkable journey of 25 years as an actor, producer

When you realize that you have travelled or spent time with a person’s career and successes and when you realize that such memory reaches a milestone, you feel memorable. Such is my memory with the career of KING Nagarjuna who has entered 25th year of his career today.
The memory is crystal clear. It was one of days in may 1986 and the theatre is PGR Movie land in Tirupati. The movie- Vikram and the hero Akkineni Nagarjuna. I still remember myself watching the movie and I still remember critics ripping the hero apart as the lean and most commented that he will not succeed. At the age of 11 years, I didn’t know anything except liking the hero. Don’t ask me why…because I don’t have answer. I have seen most of his movies and enjoyed even some of his flops. Couple of movies later, I heard the seniors in my school and the elder sisters of my friends going gung ho about a new movie released in the town and the man has seen his real success in his fourth film with majnu. Audience loved him in the role of lover and fans could see the legendary ANR on the screen. The power of his eyes is first seen on the screen. But still the critics didn’t accept him on acting skills. He had lot to learn and he never disagreed on the same. His journey continued and my interest in the hero is renewed though it never took any special place. The day has almost after 3 years of his debut in movies in the way of two movies- First geethanjali in the summer of 1989 and then shiva during diwali of 1989. Two movies, am sure most of the telugu film audience would agree has changed the face of telugu cinema forever and has established nagarjuna as the genuine actor and real successor of legendary ANR. While geethanjali has brought maniratnam close to telugu audience, shiva has introduced a new wave legendary director called Ram Gopal Varma. I still remember watching these two movies atleast 30- 40 times and I remember getting excited watching every scene of these movies. While geethanjali has established him as a lover boy and actor, shiva has helped him establish himself as a strong force in telugu cinema in more than one ways. It was a miracle in an industry where making a movie with a new director is unheard of and that too with a guy who hasn’t assisted anyone. And he is seen as a star who encourages genuine talent.
Post Shiva, Nagarjuna has seen a volley of flops. Neti Siddhartha, Prema Yuddham, Iddharu Iddhare, Shanti Kranthi, Jaithrayaatra and Chaitanya have come and gone without trace and again people commented that nagarjuna is gone. The movies could have flopped but the spirit didn’t tank and his next movie with Priyadarshan- Nirnayam brought him back into the limelight and I would say he didn’t look back. The most important here is that these were the days when the number of centres and the collections were important in the industry and he is the first star who thought beyond these numbers. Despite the result of the films, he committed himself to different scripts and different directors. The next milestone in the journey of nagarjuna is annamayya and his career can be classified as pre annamayya and post annamayya. He got critical acclaim from all classes for annamayya. There were people who said that he cannot play annamayya and no one can imagine annamayya with mustache etc., but he chose to break the jinx and again he is proven right. After annamayya he couldn’t stand up to the expectations and has seen a volley of failures till we saw santosham and manmadhudu. Today he has grown beyond success and failure and the most important reason for the same is that he takes care of business aspect and never did we see a producer losing money. He is known to be a guy who doesn’t demand on high budgets and who doesn’t force producers to retain movies in theatres despite poor run. Being a smart businessman he made his right investment in media by owning MAA TV and also produced TV serials besides movies.
Now as he looks back at his footprints for the last 25 years, he has introduced his son in the industry and can genuinely feel satisfied with the journey. Iam glad that Iam closely associated with his silver jubilee journey. I hope that his future projects will give us an opportunity to classify his career as post silver jubilee and pre silver jubilee.

Veturi...You will always be alive

జ్ఞాపకం ( You and memory)

First time and last time

For everything in life there is a first time and a last time. Everything that begins should end. But what you think as last time or end may not be really last time or end of anything but could be first time or begining of another event. Events may end, but the activity wont end....The feelings wont end...the emotions wont end and the life wont end. It may end in current form but starts in another form. The simplest form of life is a day. Just like a day begins and end, our life begins and end. Just like a new day starts the next day, new life happens. Waking up in the morning is like birth and sleeping is like death. We sleep in the night with a new hope for tomorrow eventhough we donno if that tomorrow really exists or not. Similarly, hope should guide us in our death and only then we can overcome the sorrow of death. Death is not an end but a begining. It all depends on our understanding of the events, activities associated with it and how we take it.

India- An Investor economy or an asset economy?

If you have read enough about recession, loss of jobs, people not having money etc etc and got bored, take a break and visit a jewellery store in your city and Iam sure you will refuse to accept that there is a word called RECESSION. Even Iam surprised yesterday when I saw this famous jewellery store completed filled with people buying various items of gold for themselves, their loved ones. Being a banker and financial consultant, this took me to the thought of mentality of Indian investor. Its true that people invest in safe assets like gold, FD, debt instruments during instruments. So, Do you mean to say that the consumer behaviour explained in the above para confirms to the investor behaviour? No, because we indians never sell gold that we buy. For us gold is an asset to display our status...our prestige and not an instrument we trade in any market. Across the world people invest in gold ETF, gold bonds and trade in gold in commodity markets whereas in India we buy gold in form of jewellery majorly to which we attach lot of emotional and sentimental value. Though we wear most of the jewellery only during parties and functions, probably once or twice an year we love the jewelery that we wear, we love to flaunt the jewellery, an asset. Parents proudly gift jewellery during wedding and status of parents is mostly judged by the amount of jewellery gifted. If it is an investor economy, probably parents would have gifted an instruments which is tradeable or exchangable. This brings me to the point that we are primarily asset owners and not investors. We love to own assets and invest less. Thats why we have more affinity towards land, gold. If you look at the most favorite instruments of indians for investment, majority would vote for FD which is considered a safe instrument, though this instrument gives negative returns most of the time. Very few urbane people invest in market instruments like mutual funds, stocks and the market penetration in any of these products including life insurance, ULIP is single digit for the same reason. And for this precise reason, whenever FIIs withdraw from markets we get heartache. The fact that in language of financial markets, anything that isnt traded doesnt have market value and hence the gold and real estate unless traded or sold cannot be treated as having market value. Looking at FD, that rarely gives positive market adjusted real returns, I believe that we Indians need to learn a lot on investment if we have to grow as an investor economy and not remain as an asset economy. Unless we learn, we wouldnt be able to dominate our own financial markets and offset the impact of FIIs on our lives.

Inorder is the order of the day

When you step out into the city traffic either in Bangalore and Hyderabad in specific, you are hit by traffic mania for the time you are out. How many times have you seen people crossing the road in hurry even when traffic signal turns red???? How many times have u seen vehicles takes the opposite side of the road whenever ur stuck in traffic jam, blocking other side of traffic and making it a mess??? How many times do you find motor cycles and cars tampered making it environmental hazard??? And in how many times of the above will you find an educated violating the rules.
Its understandable when a city bus driver or a cab driver or an autorickshaw breaking the rules, but most of the times may be more than 50% of the times will you find an educated jumping the rules with lot of pride. I was taking a ride with one of my colleague sometime back and found him rushing despite red and I asked him. he said, nuthing sir, This is the way of life and no one bothers.... In most of the cases, you will find a cop helplessly in a corner.
It is bothering to see even educated violating rules and creating inorder on the roads and in other parts of our lives. For ges,we have blamed population and lack of education as menace of our country or rather used the same as an excuse. But here, the educated too behave irresponsibly. No one seems to be caring for the rules. People seem to forget that these rules are set by us for our safety and we dont care. It has become a fashion to jump rules than obey.
I was wondering and thinking what could be the real reason for the inorder of the day. I was wondering if education or lack of education, the real problem of this country. The real reason, after long thought seems to be not education but the way we live and we are brought up. I would rather call it inorder in our lives. It starts from childhood where parents bribe you for your performance in studies. If you come first, we will buy you what we want. It starts in temple where you cant wait in queue and try bribing the security. It starts with bribing in public offices for what they are supposed to do,even if they dont ask for. It is all about impatience. Assume that you are in a public office or in a hospital or any other place where four people are waiting. Just to avoid waiting or to show your superiority, we flash names of people who matter,we try to bribe security and break the lines. Then, about education. Education or opportunities have improved a lot in our country since 90s,where there was only one school, one college in everytime. But public education has bitten the dust. You wont find any concept of public education anymore. We find schools where we have to shell out 50K-1 lac from primary education and it goes on as you grow. It is given even for children that even if they cant clear any public exmination, dad will pay for the seat. Higher you pay, higher is your prestige in the society. The education you buy can earn you a degree, but not culture, values and ethics.
So educated or uneducated, unless the way we live changes I believe that this inorder will continue. As long as impatience in our lives is taken out we will continue to struggle, suffer and keep blaming system and politicians for the plight brought out by us in our own lives.

Are Governments accountable????

We decide our rulers based on the promises they make and credibility they display with their plans for the country, city etc., They may deliver some, may not some promises and come back in next election for the votes. Most of them take up populist developmental works in the last 1-2 years of the tenure, as they believe that public memory is very short and may not remember the work done in first 2 years. Again, they takeup populist developmental works that can bring them into power and not those needed by majority.Again we vote to find ourselves cheated and waiting for the development. I was wondering if we have any recourse and should we have frequent elections which can keep rulers on toes and deliver. Not feasible as it involves huge cost. What else is the recourse??Should rulers have accountability???The money we earn, save or spend most of the times depends on the developmental works taken up by governments. Just for an example, take roads. If a city has better roads we can maintain decent speeds, no bumper to bumper traffic and ultimately saving in money and time as we can get better mileage in whatever vehicle you drive, car bike or public transport. What are governments doing to the citizens by not giving good roads? We spend more and wait for long wasting both money and time. If the governments vouch that they work for the welfare of the people, isnt it correct for them to work towards development that helps the majority people? When they couldnt help us save fuel and money with better roads, do they have a right to punish us by raising fuel prices? This is just an example and the same can be discussed about anything that matters in our lives. My point here is to discuss on accountability of the governments for the BASIC development we can expect and to stress on overall development and not just populist votebank based development. When we buy a TV and if it breaks down in reasonably less time,we sue the company for not able to deliver on the promises they made. Government is educating us by suggesting us to take up with consumer forum and Jaago graahak Jaago. When the rulers who can change fate of people and country dont perform...dont deliver and makes lives miserable,do we have a consumers forum to sue them??? Do we have any tool to counter " THE ONCE IN 5 YEARS" shield the politicians use to fool people????

Is Srilankan Crisis over?

Prabhakaran is dead. Is Srilankan crisis over with his death? Entire world is celebrating. Presidents of states are sending in congratulatory notes to Rajpakse. At the same point in time, arent we blind of the fact that thousands of people are dead in the crisis and no one is mourning for them? Arent their lives valuable enough to spend two minutes in their memory? Is srilankan crisis over with Prabhakaran’s death and can we see peace back? Can we see a normal srilanka? Answer would be a big NO.
The crisis in srilanka has started before prabhakaran and would not end after his death. There is no doubt that Prabhakaran and LTTE are terrorist organisations and in no way reflect for betterment of tamils in srilanka. The first mistake done by media and governments is to identify ethnic tamil problem with Prabhakaran and glorify him. The 80’s and early 90’s saw prabhakaran becoming larger than life human being and tamil problem taking backseat. With the assasination of Rajivgandhi, LTTE lost their support and their run for survival started. In the last 30 years of crisis, if there is anyone who got affected a lot it is the srilankan state and tamils living in north. Young children and members of family were recruited for the cause of LTTE and prabhakaran has put lives of people in jeopardy. The meaning of the word leader is misinterpreted with the man like Prabhakaran. The one who puts lives of his own people at stake can never be a true leader, whatever the cause be. Over 61 years 125,000 Tamils have been killed, 900,000 internal refugees have been created and around 1.3 million Tamils have fled the country. There are scores of sinhalese, military and people of various races killed in the crisis. So many leaders have lost their lives. I believe that neither LTTE nor srilankan government ever focussed on resolution of crisis of tamilian people. It had rather become an ego clash or a battle of oneupmanship between srilankan government and LTTE. Not just the srilankan government but also the Indian government and world community was never bothered about tamil community. If so, they would have taken appropriate measures to ensure safety of civilians in the entire war.At the end, prabhakaran is dead but I dont think the crisis is over. Today lives are lost and lakhs of people have become refugees in their own country and in India. The rehabilitation, even if srilankan government and world are serious enough would take many years and would need lot of sincerety and tamilians needs to be convinced of the same, if the same has to succeed. No efforts to bringback normalcy would succeed if the tamilians are not given equality and tamil is given place besides sinhalese. The root of the problem has to be attacked and solution needs to be worked out. Srilankan government should create a machinery which can work on rehabilitation in the north of the country. World community should supervise the same which can bring confidence back with tamilians. Unless tamilians of given confidence on sincerety to solve the problem and workability of the solution proposed, the crisis will be far from over and we may see birth of many prabhakarans.
